Steve Tilford Foundation Announces Grants to Empower Youth Cycling Initiatives
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Lawrence, Kansas, 19 January 2024 – The Steve Tilford Foundation is proud to announce the dispersion of two significant grants, totaling nearly $25,000, aimed at fostering youth development and community engagement through cycling. These grants exemplify the foundation’s commitment to carrying on the legacy of the late Steve Tilford, a cycling icon known for his passion for the sport and dedication to nurturing the next generation of cyclists.
The foundation is pleased to award a $15,000 grant to the Kansas chapter of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). This generous contribution will support NICA’s mission of promoting interscholastic mountain biking, emphasizing skill-building, and fostering a strong sense of community among young riders. The Kansas NICA program has been instrumental in introducing youth to the joys and challenges of mountain biking, creating a platform for personal growth and teamwork.
In addition, the Steve Tilford Foundation is granting nearly $10,000 to Donderdag, a youth development and cyclocross racing initiative. This funding will bolster Donderdag’s efforts to provide opportunities for young cyclists to participate in cyclocross racing—a dynamic and challenging discipline that not only builds athletic skills but also instills values of determination and sportsmanship. Donderdag assisted with costs of travel and on-site support for junior athletes that traveled to the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Louisville, Kentucky last month and for several other major races throughout the 2023 season. The foundation recognizes the importance of supporting diverse cycling disciplines to ensure a well-rounded experience for aspiring young riders.
“Steve Tilford was not only a remarkable athlete but also a passionate advocate for youth cycling. The foundation is honored to contribute to organizations that share Steve’s vision for empowering the next generation of cyclists,” said Matt Gilhousen, Co-Founder and President. “These grants to Kansas NICA and Donderdag reflect our commitment to fostering a love for cycling and its positive impact on young lives.”
The Steve Tilford Foundation invites the community to celebrate these grants and join in supporting the growth of youth cycling. Through these initiatives, the foundation aims to inspire a lifelong love for cycling and continue Steve Tilford’s legacy of promoting the sport’s values of camaraderie, perseverance, and joy.
